Martinis are classy drinks that people usually order if they are wanting to sip at their alcohol slowly. In their most basic form, they are a mix of gin and vermouth. The ratio is usually four parts gin to one part vermouth. The two major classes of the drink are the clean versus dirty martini.
The Dirty Martini
A dirty martini is a little bit saltier than the classic martini. First, it all starts off with an ice shaker filled with ice. Then, just use the four to one ratio of hard liquors. Then, you add some olive juice or brine. Just add a splash- don't make it too strong. Shake up the mix and then pour it out into a signature martini glass. Then, one can add the famous sword filled with olives to top it off.
The Clean Martini
For this recipe, the mixture should be of vodka and vermouth. Add three parts vodka to the shaker with ice and then one part vermouth. This should then be poured into a chilled martini glass. Then, rest the three olives on a stick on the edge of the glass and serve.
Both of these drinks are the same price at most establishments. According to an article in the New York Post, the martini costs $2.91 per glass. However, most places will charge $13 for it (https://nypost.com/2007/05/16/3-drink-13-martini/).
Part of the mark up is probably due to the fact that there is more than a double shot of pure alcohol in a martini. People who are moderate drinkers might only consume one in an entire evening. So, the price range has to do with the fact that establishments have to pay their lease, utilities, and staff.
For a fun night out, try getting a martini in it's basic form. Be careful though to plan for a taxi home as one is sure to make a person tipsy.
