Rules and Goals of Bull Riding
There are different rules and regulations used in bull riding competitions. However, there are significant similarities in most events. Typically, bulls which are eligible to perform are selected based on their agility, health and strength. The potential riders are matched with the selected bulls. The match can be random or deliberate. The rider will then mount the bull and grasp a braided rope to keep themselves on the animal. The bull is then released into the arena.
As mentioned, the goal of the bull riding competition is for the rider to remain on the bull. Normally, there are judges who are present to award points to both the bull and the rider. However, for the rider to be awarded these points, they must remain on the bull for at least eight seconds. The score is made on a scale of zero to fifty for the bull and the rider, and the total points out of hundred will determine the ranking.
During the bull riding, the rider must only support themselves using their riding hand and the braided rope. The other hand must remain free. If this free hand is used for support or it touches the bull or rope, the rider will be disqualified. The judges will award and deduct points by observing the rhythm, control and even the riding style. In some cases, if the bull scores low points, the rider may be offered a chance
