Motorcycles are currently part of our daily lives little do we know the far they have come from or the development they have undergone over time. The former of the motorcycle was a safety bike that used a pedal crank mechanism in 1800s. Pierre Machaux a pedal bicycle in 1860s which was later fitted with a steam engine. In 1885, Gottlieb Daimler came up with a wooden gas-engine motorcycle named ‘riding car.’ The first commercial bike was then invented in 1894 and officially named ‘motorcycle’ by Hildebrand and Wolfmuller. Royal Enfield then came up with a 239cc bike. As a result, Haley Davidson started producing commercial motorcycles and bikes.
Indian Motorcycle Company also caught the trend and controlled the market with their 1.75hp which was the best selling motorcycle. Initially, the bikes were used to pass messages during war and 50% of Haley Davidson’s production was used. In 1980s, Kawasaki and Honda came up with motorcycles fitted with an electronic fuel injection system. Motorcycles were initially seen as a symbol of wealth but their massive production has made them popular and affordable by many. Until today, leaders in the motorcycle industry include Yamaha, Suzuki and Haley Davidson.
Motorcycle equipments and accessories
Before riding a motorcycle, you need to put on the right protective gears. Helmet is the most important safety gear you can ever wear when riding a motorcycle. This protects your head from serious injuries in case of an accident apart from shielding your face. Helmets are made with a hard shell that spreads impact while the liner (energy absorbing layer) absorbs energy. They may be open-face, flip-face or full-face which are better than open face.
Boots reduces harm to riders’ or passengers’ feet and ankle in case of a crash. They are made of a material that is cut, impact, abrasion, burst or tear resistant. There are boots which are moderately flexible, tough, strong and have stiff soles which protects the rider from a number of risks. On the other hand, riding gloves are made of leather and have gauntlets which protect the wrist from injury. They are also cold resistant especially when riding in cold climates. The gloves have reinforced palms that prevent abrasion injuries in the event of an accident.
Types of bikes
There are different types of bikes including the choppers, rockets and cruisers. The cruisers are heavy and meant for comfort with padded seats, balloon tires and curved back handlebars. The current ones have frames made of aluminum to reduce weight. Choppers have long front ends, hardtail frames, tall handlebars and larger front wheels. Bike engines differ according to their capacity and sizes. A 1200cc motorcycle is more powerful than that of 600cc but. However, those are not the only engines. We have the 1000cc, 750cc, 50cc, e.t.c.
